Thrown Vessel with Slips, Underglaze and Glaze on Stoneware
This vessel is inspired by a photograph that I took at an abandoned hotel in Cornwall. In my vessels, I always try to incorporate words and phrases that I find in the buildings, or associate with the buildings as a way of remembering my time there. I find it very amusing some of the things that are sprawled across the walls in these buildings. The colours and marks in the piece resemble those found in the photograph, and from my memory of being there at the time.
By distorting and deconstructing my vessels, I explore the relationship between form and imperfection, highlighting the contrast between carefully made and intentionally flawed. These distortions also mirror the conditions of the structures and objects that I observe, for example, the boarded-up windows, and the discarded, crushed spray cans that have lost their original forms.
